Ecuadorian authorities have successfully recaptured Adolfo “Fito” Macías, the country’s most-wanted drug lord, more than a year after his dramatic escape from a maximum-security prison. Macías, the powerful leader of the Los Choneros gang, had vanished in early 2024, triggering a nationwide crisis.
His escape prompted Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa to declare an internal armed conflict, launching a major crackdown on organized crime and violent gangs.
Fito had long terrorized Ecuador with his gang’s involvement in drug trafficking, extortion, and violent attacks. His flight from prison not only embarrassed security forces but also fueled a surge in gang-related violence, including riots, prison massacres, and public executions.
Ecuador’s military and police launched a year-long manhunt, deploying intelligence operations and coordinated raids across the country. Officials confirmed his capture in a strategic raid without resistance. The arrest is seen as a symbolic and strategic victory for the government’s anti-gang campaign.
President Noboa praised the operation and reaffirmed his commitment to restoring law and order in Ecuador. Citizens, who have faced increasing insecurity in recent years, welcomed the news with hope. The government now aims to dismantle remaining gang structures and restore peace to the streets.
